This weekend was the perfect weather for getting started on carving our pumpkins. We carved up the two largest ones and will savor the experience and do a few at a time over the next several weeks. Nothing says fall to me more than the smell of fresh cut pumpkin goo.
Then we took our final trip to the apple orchard. With snow and freezing temperatures last week, this is the end of the harvest. That means great deals for us, $1 a lb. when you pick your own!
The leaves on the apple trees had turned brown and the apples were deep red. It was a beautifully muted atmosphere. 
Perfection.
Bittersweet, indeed.

Gorgeous photos. Bittersweet indeed. My babies are 18 and 21 and both in college, and this is the first year I probably won't do too much Halloween decorating. A bit more fall and nature inspired. Miss the kiddie Halloweens of days gone by but enjoying the more mellow days. Thanks for the inspiring and nostalgia inducing post. Pam

Looks like your kids had a happy pumpkin carving time. I think we may carve some this weekend. Scraping the insides out is a true creepy Halloween feeling!!
Glad you were able to enjoy the end of the apple harvest season. I would have thought that after a freeze the apples would be mushy.
