Breaking ground...

The weather is finally staying pretty warm and we've had quite a bit of rain, so things are really greening up. That means time to get out the gardening tools and get busy! The green shovel below is the one that I had as a child working in the huge backyard garden we had. The pink is Chloe's new cultivator. Like grandmother, like mother, like daughter. Chloe and I broke ground today in our backyard. We are making a very small children's garden for the kids to participate in the process of starting seeds, planting, caring for and harvesting. Should be fun! I found this great web site with lots of resources and ideas for gardening with children.
Lots of hard work moving grass and dirt around.
Next we will start to ammend and work the soil.
Thanks for all the responses to the interview questions I sent out to those interested in participating in my new column JunkMama Journals for the wishstudio blogzine. If you have an interest in thrifting, I'd love to hear from you. Send me an email at artsy_mama@hotmail.com and I'll send you the questions. Thanks!

Speaking of which, this cute little pair is one of my favorite thrifty finds of late.

Good for you for spending time with your kids in the garden. My mother loved gardening, but somehow she made me hate it. She enjoyed dreaming and planhing her garden, putting plants in and caring for them...without involving me. And then she would make me do the weeding, which I absolutely hated. I often wish she had found a way to share her gardening love with me, because now she's gone. Fortunately I've since come into a healthy relationship with gardening in pots :) No weeding

Lovely appliques!

What fun it will be for your family to get into the garden together.

Those pictures of your daughter are so adorable!! My son considers himself an "avid gardener" so it is nice to see other kids enjoying it as well :)

lovely Kari, so good for kids to learn how to do things like that, it makes them more aware of our earth and what we put in is what we get out. Nice to pop in again.Bonnie

How sweet it is to enjoy Springtime after the long winter - and what better way to enjoy it than gardening with your children! When we lived in Montana we planted miniature vegetables for our children's garden (60 day growing season!)-- those miniature corn stalks were a hoot!! Treasure these moments always!

Always love seeing that precious Chloe. She's such a darling. Thanks for the link to that kids gardening site. Very cool.
Lilli's story reminds me of my MIL. She is the same way about gardening all because her mother wouldn't let her do anything but the weeding!

It's great to garden with kiddos. My son always had someplace to plant flowers or seeds, even an old tractor tire (we still have it!) Plant things that come up fast like lettuce, radishes and zinnias (seeds). I still have my son's garden and he's home on break from college and he'll plant it yet again with marigolds and other things.
Take lots of photos like you share here! I can't tell you how many photos I have of him sniffing flowers! LOL
