Collecting treasures....

Hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend! Just when I was complaining about my estate sale rut, I came across a fabulously fun sale on Saturday. It was an old-school sale, old house full of junk, stinky and packed. I spent most of my time in the basement. I came across these gumdrop dolls from the 80's and immediately thought of this sweet lady.
Then in the corner of a little room in the basement that was full of sewing supplies and trims, I came across these vintage knotty chenille rolls. I immediately thought of the wall of these in Jennifer Murphy's studio.
What a find! Although, I have no idea what I'm going to do with them. Just stare at them for now:)
Then began my project for the weekend. After seeing Kristina's Anthropologie book here, I decided that I wanted to create an album housing all my estate sale pictures and memorabilia. Definitely in line with my Year of Color theme, I found this wonderful album at Michael's and matching paper in the Que Sera Sera line by K and Co. and so it began...
I printed off more than a hundred pictures from the last 5 years of estate sales. Many of the items in the pictures have either been sold or "re-purposed" for use in my art. Some of you may may even be the current owners of some of these treasures! I'm so glad I take pictures of all these gems. Now I can house them all in one place.
The first several pages of the album has tabbed pages that have pockets on top. More room for receipts, packaging or labels that are worth keeping. As you can see, I have journaling tags that still need to be filled in. I'm sure I will add more to the pages as well.
Since these pages did not have page protectors I could embellish them with lots of chunky bits of trim, millinery and other odds and ends.

Then begins the pages with page protectors. Since there are dozens and dozesn of pages to share with you, I put six pages together and laid them out to photograph. They are each 8.5"x8.5". They look all bunched up here, but you get the gist.

What a project! This book is already so much fun to page through. I cannot wait to keep adding more to my treasure collection!

16 things about me...

I really enjoyed reading Ali and Kelly Rae's 16 things posts. Then someone suggested for the group going to ArtNest next month that we all do this to get to know each other better. There are two spots left for the workshops, you should join us. Hallmark magazine will be there to do a story on the retreat. It's going to be so much fun! Anyway, I thought it would be fun to compile a list and share it.
Here goes...
1. I'm a Minnesota girl through-and-through. I would never live anywhere else. I love to travel, but always want to come home to Minnesota. There's something about about the wholehearted enjoyment of all four seasons here. It's a place where we brave frigid temps and then glow like it's springtime when it gets to 27 degrees, like today. I love that!

2. I have started and stopped so many art journals. The pages on this post are from my new daily journal for this year. However, I don't get down if I stop a journal after a few days or a few months and never pick it up again. I know I will find a new book and begin again. It's all about the process, not completing the book. I find that so freeing!
3. I have no idea what "style" I like. It changes each day. One day I'm into cutsey, girly pink and then next day bright, vivid retro. I will never be able to choose, and I guess I don't have to.

4. I hope to do another ArtsyMama book through blurb. I think vol. 2 will come out late this year or early next. In the meantime, I am beyond thrilled that ArtsyMama will be a part of Tara's book coming out this fall.
5. I tend to over-think things and read into them too much. I need to just take things for face value and not over-analyze or judge as "good" or "bad". Working on that one.

6. I have a really hard time finishing a book. I check out books all the time at work....I'm a librarian. I bring them home and either scan them or have them in a basket and never get to them. It seems that the bits of "me time" I get each day is always filled up with doing art or blogging. By the time I get into bed at night to read, I'm asleep within 5 minutes.

7. I find it very amusing that I share so many home photos on this blog. I've always been a very cluttery person. Ever since discovering estate sales and vintage treasures I've become more interested in decorating and now it helps me to keep things neater so that I can share pictures with all of you. Also after having kids I realized that if I don't keep up with the clutter we would all be buried in it within a week. Now I find that clutter drives me crazy. I am constantly going around picking things up. It's a loosing battle. See #11.

8. Speaking of kids, I can hardly remember my life before having kids. I was talking to some girlfriends about this last night. Of course I have memories of specific events, but it's all pretty much a blur before they were born. Now I can't imagine life without them.

9. I have always been interested in having relationships with people that I've never met in person sharing common interests. When we were young, my sister and I were really into watching gymnastics on tv. We loved the Russian's and Romanian's the best. We had pen pals all over the world and would share photos of gymnasts from magazines and newspapers and write letters to one another. Laura and I would run out to the mailbox and greet the mailman awaiting the mail each day. Today I have all of you that I love to communicate with. I appreciate every single comment and run to check my inbox just as I did the mailbox long ago!

10. I am going through major estate sale withrawl right now. This winter has been so slow for estate sales here and really slim pickin's. Has anyone else noticed a difference in their thrifting selection...and prices?? 11. Why is it that kids find it so fun to make huge messes? Lowell and and Chloe will spend a half hour taking every last thing out of Chloe's room, including the shelves on the wall and put it all in the hallway or bring it down the couch. Case in point, just as I'm writing this post, this is what I saw when I went upstairs. Every single roll of new toilet paper unraveled and thrown all over the floor and plugging up the toilet. Ugh!

12. My favorite smells are sandlewood, vanilla and chocolate chip cookies baking.
13. This was my first camera and this is my camera now.
14. The older I get the more anxious I get about flying in planes, driving at night, driving on icy roads and other life threatening events. I keep seeing car accidents and then those images get lodged into my mind and I think of every worse case senario every time I'm driving. I can't imagine what I'll be like when I'm sixty.

15. I'm always on the go and always thinking of the next project. It really motivates me and keeps me creative. My dad is the same way. At the same time I really try to enjoy the moment and not be thinking ahead too much. It's a delicate balance.

16. I wish I spent more time thinking about my clothes. It's just not a priority for me right now and I feel that I express myself in so many other ways. I am interested in fashion and maybe some day I'll put some more effort into my own appearance:)

This list was really hard to do. I tried not to do #5 as I made the list, so it's pretty random. What a fun exercise, though. If you do a 16 things list, please leave the url in the comments.

Making springtime...

Rainbow ice garden on Medicine Lake.

It finally warmed up to 20 degrees today, so we were able to get outside with the kids and actually play in the gorgeous white snow that we've only been able to look at for the last week with the sub-zero temps. Here is Lowell with his "change it to spring" shovel. Chloe was on one of the swings of the swing set you see in the background of this photo. The snow was too deep for the swing to move when I pushed her, so I shoveled some of the snow away exposing the grass below. Lowell exclaimed, "Mommy you made it spring!!" Since he could see the grass below he proclaimed it spring-time. Very cute! So here is the ever-optimistic Lowell digging away in the deep snow to find springtime. He has a ways to go....
Hope you found just a little bit of springtime in your day!
P.S. If you signed up for A Year of Color blog and have not received the invite to join the blog, please email me at artsy_mama@hotmail.com. I have lots of invites that haven't been "accepted" yet. Check your PayPal email and your etsy email for the invite.

Centering...

With these frigid temps we've been having, my mind just can't decide if it likes the cold color palette of blue and white or the warm sweetness of bubblegum pink. So I have a little battle of the colors going on here on my studio dresser. The hearts and girly pinks of Valentine's Day are definitely starting to creep in. In the middle of it all, I have the gorgeous Buddha statue that Hope just gave me. I love it. It reminds me to slow down, take a breath and be mindful.I have the same dilemma in the living room, the Christmas wreath still up along with Valentine's goodies sneaking in here and there. Such are the dilemmas of a seasonal decorator. Hehe!

Have a great weekend!

Feeling sweet....

This post is going to make me look like I'm just laying around thinking about sweet treats in soft fluffy pink and blue pastel tones. Well.... really, what else is a girl supposed to do when the high is five degrees below zero!? Here are a few more of my daily art journal pages. Thanks for your sweet comments and encouragement on this new project. I appreciate it.

Chloe and I also made some sweet treats to indulge in during the deep freeze.
Finally, I have been pretty obsessed with inspiration boards/mood boards, whatever you may call them, for quite some time. I just love the visual manifestation of the inner working of the creative mind. For A Year of Color, the theme for January is blue and white. I just happened to have this blue and white board that I thought I would fill with some of my favorite eye candy in happy, wintery blues. It reminds me of both my words for 2009....color and blue. I think I will make one of these each month on the color theme that we're doing for A Year of Color blog. Blue also makes me think of a invigorating, clean, abeit cold, breath of fresh air!

Every day...

Inspired by Ali's word of the year, mine is "breathe" (and color), Emily's 52 weeks of questions and most of all Jeska's amazing Record the day blog, I have begun a fat and colorful notebook that is going to get even more plump and juicy and more colorful over the next 365 days. I am going to do a page each day in this art journal. I am very excited and have begun in earnest. Here are my first several pages. This was so theraputic and so much fun to but bits of this and that together to capture my day visually and in writing.

Can't wait to see this journal get big and full over the next year!
A Year of Color blog is going strong with it's first swap underway. Remember that to participate in my swaps this year, they will all go through A Year of Color blog. Come join us, we're having a ball!

So many things...

to make and do this year. Just like the title of this wonderful journal by Nickki McClure my hubby got me for Christmas. Perfect for all those incubating ideas. I set it out on a table next to the amazing mushroom that Terisa made me. I love my fungi! Thank you all for such enthusiasm and support for my year-long collaborative blog A Year of Color. See post below for more details. I am adding guest designers by the day and subscribers by the hour. Very exciting! What a vibrant community is being formed. The first month's color theme is blue and white. Here are the inspiration journal pages I put together to spark my creativity.

It's fun to think about a new palette now that all the Christmas decorations have been put away. What colors are you thinking about right now?

Colorful New Year...

I am thrilled to announce that 2009 will be....

I have started a new blog that goes live today and runs all the way through 2009. I have a host of fabulous artists sharing their creativity and inspiration throughout the year.

They include:

The blog is appropriately called A Year of Color. After hosting the Sweet and Sinister blog I asked people to fill out a survey to find out what they thought about the blog and what seasons or holiday's they would enjoy a similar blog for in the future. I took all the surveys into account and combined all my ideas into one YEAR LONG blog. Each month of the year will concentrate on a color or palette. Our guest designers and myself will be sharing craft tutorials, seasonal decor, holiday and birthday party ideas, photography tips and sharing, journaling prompts, live chats, guest posts and swaps all corresponding with color! There will be several swaps throughout the year and to participate you must be a member of the blog.

Julie Collings is kicking off the blog launch with a gorgeous blue and white palette for January. Don't delay, the fun is beginning now! The cost is $1 per month, in a lump sum of $12 for the entire year! You will gain access to the blog and all the exciting inspiration and projects we have to share.

It's for sale HERE in my etsy shop. After paying you will receive an email inviting you to join the blog. Please note-the email will be sent to your PayPal email unless otherwise specified.

For those of you that may be wondering, I will still be posting as fequently as always to this blog. ArtsyMama is not going anywhere! I just thought it would be really fun to have an additional space to interact and inspire one another with a common theme in mind.

2009 is going to be full of color!

Happy New Year!

Wow...another year! 2008 has been full in so many ways. 2009 promises to be another year with so many more adventures. I'm excited to see what comes, and to share it here with you.

I love that New Year's Eve gives me a reason to bring out my vintage hats and party horns. Also gives Chloe a reason to make yet another cake.Inspired by Ali Edwards, I enjoy choosing a new word to concentrate on each year. For 2009, my word is COLOR. Tune in tomorrow to find out why.

I thank you for taking the moments out of your days in 2008 to stop by this space. It's such a joy to share the journey with you!
